The Economic Development Board, host agency of the SheTrades Mauritius Hub, in collaboration with the Indian Business Council, held the second session of its Financial Literacy training series on “Financial Statements”.
The initiative forms part of an ongoing effort to empower women entrepreneurs by strengthening their financial literacy to effectively manage and interpret their business accounts.
In her opening remarks, Mrs Nirmala Jeetah, Director of the Healthcare & Life Sciences, ITC SheTrades Mauritius Hub, highlighted the importance of understanding financial statements and key accounting indicators. She maintained that essential financial reports, including the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement, provide valuable insights into the financial health, sustainability and growth trajectory of a business.
The session was delivered by Mr Tony Malik, an accomplished Chartered Accountant and Senior Financial Executive with more than three decades of international experience spanning several countries, including Mauritius.
Throughout the training, Mr Malik delivered a practical and comprehensive overview of the structure, purpose and interrelationship of the principal financial statements. Participants were introduced to core accounting concepts and explored key financial indicators including gross profit margin, net profit margin and mark-up, all of which are fundamental concepts for assessing business performance, profitability and pricing strategies. In addition, participants gained valuable insights into operational and financial management areas such as stock management, working capital and basic ratio analysis.
While foundational in nature, the concepts addressed during the session constitute essential building blocks for entrepreneurs seeking to enhance their financial management skills and scale their businesses strategically and sustainably.
The training session was highly engaging and interactive, with participants actively contributing to discussions and sharing practical challenges encountered within their respective businesses. Building on the momentum of the programme, the SheTrades Mauritius Hub will host two additional training sessions in this series dedicated to Financial Planning for Growth, Taxation and Financial Risk Management and Insurance. This initiative reflects the Hub’s ongoing dedication to equipping women entrepreneurs with the financial acumen and strategic tools necessary for long-term business success.
Women entrepreneurs are encouraged to register on the SheTrades Mauritius Platform to benefit from business development opportunities and useful resources.
