This capacity-building programme will provide insights on the ITC’s Trade Map.

Foreword - CEO, Economic Development Board

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this two-day regional workshop on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and a dedicated training session on ITC TradeMap. The Economic Development Board, as host agency of the SheTrades Mauritius hub, is proud to have collaborated with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa to bring this event to fruition.

This initiative stands as a testament to our commitment towards gender-inclusive trade and promoting regional economic integration. It marks a critical step towards ensuring that women are not left behind in Africa’s trade and development agenda.

Over the course of these three days, key stakeholders mainly from across the Southern African continent will explore the opportunities, obligations and practical considerations available under the AfCFTA framework.

The AfCFTA unlocks a single market of over 1.3 billion people and a combined GDP of more than USD 3 trillion , offering unprecedented prospects for entrepreneurs to expand their reach and diversify their customer base. Intra-African trade is vital to driving sustainable economic growth, creating jobs, and reducing dependency on external markets.

Mr. Abhimanu Kundasamy

Chief Executive Officer - EDB Mauritius

Women entrepreneurs will gain valuable insights into how to navigate cross-border trade regulations, identify new export markets, and leverage preferential market access under the AfCFTA. The workshop will also equip them with tools to improve the competitiveness of their products and services, understand rules of origin, and develop strategies to scale their businesses regionally and internationally.

Through training, dynamic discussions and a B2B session, we hope to foster a robust and practical understanding of how this agreement can serve as a catalyst for innovation and resilience in our economies.

Furthermore, participants will have the opportunity to connect directly with potential buyers, development partners, and trade support institutions that can help accelerate their growth. By engaging with peers and experts, women business owners can strengthen their networks, share success stories, and learn from best practices across the continent.

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to our partners, facilitators and participants for their unwavering commitment and engagement.

Let us use this opportunity to forge new partnerships, exchange knowledge, and advance our shared ambition for regional prosperity.

Mr. Abhimanu Kundasamy – Chief Executive Officer EDB Mauritius

Foreword - Director, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa’s Southern Africa Sub-Regional Office, Zambia

It is with great honour that I welcome all participants to this regional capacity-building workshop on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), jointly organized by the SheTrades Mauritius Hub, hosted by the Economic Development Board of Mauritius, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), through the Subregional Office for Southern Africa (SRO-SA).

As highlighted in the ECA’s Economic Report on Africa 2025, unlocking the full potential of the AfCFTA will require deliberate action to dismantle barriers and provide meaningful opportunities for women entrepreneurs. Today, women-led businesses in Southern Africa continue to face structural impediments – from limited access to trade-related information and finance to digital exclusion and compliance constraints. These barriers prevent women from fully harnessing the benefits of continental integration.

This event reaffirms our shared commitment to advancing an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient continental trade framework, which empowers all stakeholders, particularly women entrepreneurs. As we collectively strive to unlock the transformative potential of the AfCFTA, it is imperative to underscore that Africa’s economic diversification and structural transformation cannot be fully realized without the active and equitable participation of women in trade and in value chains development.

Ms. Eunice G. Kamwendo

Director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa’s Southern Africa Sub-Regional Office in Lusaka, Zambia

The workshop serves not only as a forum for knowledge exchange but also as a tangible step towards equipping women entrepreneurs with the tools, capacities, and networks required to scale their businesses beyond borders and fully integrate into regional and continental markets.

Throughout the programme, participants will benefit from tailored technical sessions on AfCFTA provisions and market access tools, including the ITC TradeMap. Women entrepreneurs will further engage in interactive panel discussions and a dedicated B2B networking event designed to foster connections with potential buyers, trade partners, and support institutions.

In addition, the exhibition space will showcase the innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit of women from across the region, underscoring their vital contribution to inclusive economic development and diversification. These engagements are instrumental in ensuring that women are not only beneficiaries of AfCFTA, but also key architects of its success.

We are especially pleased to host this event in Mauritius, a country renowned for its innovation-driven economy and its steadfast commitment to gender-responsive trade policies. I look forward to seeing and interacting with all the participants.

Ms. Eunice G. Kamwendo – Director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa’s Southern Africa Sub-Regional Office in Lusaka, Zambia

Welcome Message

The Economic Development Board is the host agency for the SheTrades Mauritius Hub, a pioneering initiative launched in collaboration with the International Trade Centre (ITC) to champion gender inclusivity in global trade.

Officially inaugurated in March 2023, the SheTrades Mauritius Hub aims to empower women entrepreneurs by offering targeted support, capacity-building programmes, and market access facilitation to enhance their international competitiveness.

Since its inception, the Hub has welcomed over 200 women-led businesses into its growing network. These businesses have gained access to a range of opportunities provided through both the EDB and the ITC SheTrades Initiative, which is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

At the heart of SheTrades lies a commitment to promoting women’s economic empowerment, recognizing the untapped potential and significant contributions they can make to our global business landscape. SheTrades serves as a catalyst for encouraging women-led businesses, providing them with a supportive ecosystem, resources, mentorship, and a bridge to connect with potential investors and partners

About the workshop

The SheTrades Mauritius Hub and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), through its Subregional office for Southern Africa (SRO-SA), are joining forces to hold a 2-day capacity building workshop, including a B2B session, for women entrepreneurs in Southern Africa and Mauritius on how to take advantage of the opportunities of the AfCFTA, and by a 1-day training session, presented by the ITC SheTrades initiative, on Trade Maps.

The AfCFTA represents a transformative opportunity for the continent, including Mauritius, by establishing a single market of 1.3 billion people across 55 countries, with a combined GDP of US$3.3 trillion, a figure projected to more than double by 2050. To fully harness the benefits of this historic agreement, it is essential that Southern African women entrepreneurs are equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to access and compete in African markets.

Empowering Southern African women entrepreneurs to trade under the AfCFTA will contribute not only to their economic empowerment but also significantly to the socioeconomic development of their countries.
